Norway's national day

Red, white and blue

Norway’s National Day is on May 17. On this day, Norway celebrates the Norwegian liberation from its neighboring country Sweden and is also the day when the Norwegian constitution was signed in 1814. Norwegians all over the world celebrate this day, and here in Norway we have very special traditions around the celebration.

Tips for party tables

On this special day, we celebrate by gathering in the streets dressed in Norway’s national costume and other smart clothing, where we toast with friends, wave the Norwegian flag and sing the national anthem to the fullest. This is the day where Norwegians consume ice-cream and hotdogs watch children proudly as the take part in street parades alongside graduating students celebrating that they have finished school.

The continued situation with the Covid Pandemic, will mean a varied celebration of this year’s National Day. Despite the circumstances, we believe that the table should be set with an element of fun – regardless of whether it is only for closest family or friends. Occasions, both large and small, are to be celebrated! We have been inspired by the national colors of Norway as the table’s main eye-catching feature.

This year’s table is covered with a classic, white tablecloth to provide a clean starting point. Together with the organic details that we find in the flowers, this is a nice contrast to the national colors red, white, and blue which are the table’s eye-catchers. With such a neutral starting point, you can have fun with a variety of table decorations.

We have chosen to create small, elemental decorations that we believe make the table setting complete.

“A tip is to tie a ribbon in the national colors around the champagne glass.”

We placed berries in the national colors on fruit skewers in the glasses, as a nice detail on the table.

This time we chose to decorate the table with our award-winning design Tuva. Tuva was designed by Per Finne in 2009. This design has unique qualities; easy to grip and well balanced in the hand, its pure, Scandinavian expression fits well with all discoveries.

Our wide range of designs represent many different styles. If you would prefer a more traditional design, maybe Kristin is the design for you? Kristin is an iconic cutlery design, inspired by woodcarving, which can be considered to replace traditional silver cutlery.

Buffet

Norway’s National Day is when we like to meet and eat well together – the day is about having fun! On this occasion, a hot and cold buffet is typical food for such a day. For serving, we have chosen to use Fjord cake forks.

“A tip is that cake forks work great as cold cuts forks!”

Here you can either use cake forks in the same design as the table setting, or you can create your own expression by combining different designs as we have done.

It’s about finding your personal style and what expression you want to create – by using our cutlery you can do just that.

The desert table

The desert table is for many the most important part of the national day. The desert table should preferably be full of cakes and sweets that tempt everyone. We have chosen to decorate the table with a cake that is covered with fresh berries in the national colors.

For the desert table, we have chosen to use Fjord cake server and cake forks. Fjord is designed by Odd Leikvoll, also known as the founder of the Hardanger brand. The design has clean, elegant lines that are typical of Scandinavian minimalism. This is one of our best-selling designs and with good reason, it is suitable for all occasions – also for celebrating a Norway’s National Day.
